"A Red Spoon for the Nameless" by Burlee Vang
This essay does a great job of repeating images, like blood and the color red or the ideas of femininity, to give the scenes more meaning. The third-person voice was unique because most essays in this genre are first-person. It gave a kind of distance that added to the idea of the "nameless" in the title. I really liked this piece. I think it's about being stuck and having secrets and how hard that can be, especially when tradition and family goes against who you really are. Vang says a lot in a little piece.
Some questions:
1. How do you know when you've used an image or idea too much?
2. How can we smoothly incorporate family traditions/ideas into our writing?
