"Pay enough attention to the craft of learning the story and telling it clearly, accurately and economically, and the art will happen when you're not looking." --Philip Gerard
I think a lot of problems writers face come from within; we censor and berate ourselves even as we're creating. To create a real work of art, I think you have to just do it, and think about it later. And in our genre, the most important thing is preserving the truth, even if it's the truth as you or another person saw it. Stories have a tendency to tell themselves if you let them. The art that can be found in real life experiences will show itself as you write and revise. Early censorship can kill creativity.
