So...I have to respond to a lot of stuff.
This semester makes me sad. All I ever do is read, read, read. :( But I like what we're reading for this class, so yay!
The Waltz
I actually didn't like this piece very much. I thought that it gave good insight into the mind of a person with OCD, but I thought some of it was too whiny, too obviously "Feel bad for me, my life is sooo hard." I appreciated the humor in some parts, but other times I felt that that it took away from the seriousness of the issue. The aspect that I appreciated the most was her voice, which was in every part of the story. Since this story was about her, it needed her voice.
Some questions:
1. Is there a technique that she could have used that would be symbolic of OCD itself, like the composition of the essay could mimic the repetitive or obsessive impulses brought on by OCD?
2. Why didn't she include more scientific information/background about OCD? Was that a style choice or other reasons?
3. How can you find a happy medium between "personal voice" and "telling too much?"
